Quote For Engine Rebuild
Guys,
I am in the process of doing a rebuild on a 2.4T motor which will be rebuilt using 2.2S P&C's, 2.2/2.4S heads, and S MFI cams which I have been gathering for the past year. The S MFI is complete and need nothing. Upon inspection of the parts I was told that the crank was good and the heads need a valve job and new valve seats. He hasn't advised yet if the P&C's need any work. I will find out in the next day. Anyway, below is his quote. Does his pricing seem reasonable? Also, what is the typical number of hours required to do a rebuild? He has quoted me 48 hours which seems high considering that he is only putting the motor together (the engine was give to him already apart) Does this estimate seem fair? Lastly, I wonder what would need to be done by a machine shop to the rods that would cost $310. Does rod bushing replacement cost this much? What other machine work could they do? When I do them they are generally between 40-60 hours depending on the amount of special items done. Diassembly would usually account for about 6 of that. Now if you brought me an engine in boxes, I would probably add on a couple of hours for organizing and cleaning the parts that you brought me, plus some extra time for inspection because I didn't see components as they came apart.
So for me, that number isn't to far off. |
doesn't seem too far off. you could do a lot better on the new valve pricing though.
Case work?? mag cases need to be checked and possibly line-bored. cams & rockers? |
Seems on the mark.

The quality of the repair should be more important than the price. Not all mechanics function at the same level.
"Not enough money to do it right, but plenty of money to do it twice?" Case work? Pump upgrade? Balancing? Head studs? If the MFI system has been sitting around, it will need work. That said the prices seem reasonable. |
