Mark in Dallas, YART (Yet another rebuild Thread)
It seems my engine didn't like shifting into 1st instead of third. Engine was down on power before the missed shift and now it is worse.
I did a leak down test and got the following. #1 6% #2 2% #3 2% #4 4% #5 100% #6 5% Did a compression and got the following #1 150 psi #2 150psi # 3 160psi #4 150 psi #5 120psi # 6 165psi It looks like I'm in for at least a top end rebuild on #5. Checked the pressures on the fuel injection before I took the engine out yesterday and everything looked good. Injectors had a good mist but a couple looked uneven so I may have them cleaned. Here is what I have done so far. Pictures to follow Mark |

Here is the empty engine bay photo http://mysite.verizon.net/resq9v3x/R...751_large.html http://mysite.verizon.net/resq9v3x/R...747_large.html Looks like my rear main seal may be leaking again. Just replaced it a few months back. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212465650.jpg http://mysite.verizon.net/resq9v3x/R...749_large.html http://mysite.verizon.net/resq9v3x/R...750_large.html http://mysite.verizon.net/resq9v3x/R...752_large.html Waiting on engine stand to continue. Looking to get the Harbor Freight 1000# stand and modify it to fit. Mark |
I guess I need to upload the photos instead of linking.

Put the engine on the engine stand and got a little further.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213845795.jpg I pulled the heads and found this. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213845844.jpg It looks like piston #5 meet exhaust valve #5. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213845904.jpg It broke the ring on that cylinder as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213845944.jpg Valve is a little bent as it is not fully seated. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213846010.jpg Now I just need to figure out what to do to get the pistons out. Was thinking I could just remove the connecting rod with the piston attached since I can get a socket on it. Mark |
Wayne's book suggests tapping the wrist pin out with the handle side of a screwdriver. Worked very well for me.
|
Remove all three cylinders. That should let you get at the piston pin clips. Then tap it out. Are you going to rebuild or repair?
|
I have Wayne's book and saw the screwdriver trick. I'm going to be reusing the pistons and cylinder so thought I could save a step.
I will be doing a top end rebuild. Balancing the bottom end. Replacing any bearing that need replacing. Replacing the rings on all pistons. Reusing the head studs as they look great and have no issues. Mark |
Exhaust side head studs were 174.00. Also have the machine shop remove your exhaust studs and replace those. Both are cheap insurance.
