My dream motor
Maybe someday, when I find some spare cash, I will build my dream Porsche motor. Dreaming is good, because through visualization, it makes things happen...So, this will be a simple, healthy motor, mostly for street. Reliable and fun. Here are my choices:
- 3.0 SC case - 95 mm nickies cylinders with 9.8:1 JE pistons - S cams - 40 mm webers - SSI heat exchangers That is it, nothing fancy or experimental, just proven solutions. I may start piling up parts for this project. If anyone has experience with this motor, I`d be happy to hear if they like it. If figure this thing would put out about 250 hp, but this is just a wild guess. Aurel Last edited by Aurel; 05-26-2008 at 06:59 PM.. |

Hi Aurel,
I have almost exactly that engine in my 71 Targa. The only difference is I have DR60 cams and 10.5:1 compression with a JB Racing twin-plug distributor (I think Henry at Supertech might have some CCW ones soon too?) I have 250 hp on the dot. Its a really fun motor, makes great sounds (into a ceramic coated 2-in-1-out porsche sport muffler.) Especially with the top off. When that muffler goes or is sold I am comtemplating M&K or Phase 9.

Sounds sweet. But thinking more about it, Webers are old technology. I would rather do an EFI conversion, and use a computer to tune up my car...Now, as far as induction goes, does EFI have same HP capabilities as carbs? Can you run S cams with EFI?

Webers are old and proven technology.
EFI has more potential for power and economy if set up by someone that knows how to tune on a dyno and burn chips. Unless you can find the right people, EFI setup can be very expensive and frustrating. Setup correctly you can't beat EFI until you turbo charge. You'll never get carbs to run a flat AFR line like EFI.

I used to run that same motor is my track car on Adaptronic EFI before transplanting it into the 71 Targa. Webers seemed so much more appropriate for that car and the sound and throttle response are fantastic.
The low- and mid-range power is slightly down on the Carbs and twin-plug distributor but that is to be expected. The EFI allows for very fine adjustment of the ignition and fuel maps. WOT power is the same. Cost is about the same. I'll continue to use EFI on the track car (supercharged) and the Webers on the antique....each has their benefits and challenges...

Hi Aurel,
I like the carb sound as well, for nostalgic reasons. But I am not so sure about them on my car, because they can give me more of a headache than a benefit. (This is particulary true in a varied climate.) I will probably go for aftermarket injection system and SSI's in a couple of years, and from what I'm told, this will put out px 260 BHP with my setup. -And it's reliable, with nice power band. Also, isn't injection systems cheaper than carbs? Maybe I'll even go for twin turbo..! ![]() I'm sceptical towards turbo, because of the not-so-cool sound, and that I've never actually driven one. Once I've test driven one, I'll know what to do. I'm having fears for never being satisfied with my car. Moderation is not my strong points...! ![]() |

Hi Otto,
I know you addressed Aurel but I'll say hi too... I dont think you can say EFI is cheaper than Carbs. The premium Carb setup is PMOs or Professionally rebuilt Webers, ITG or similar filters with custom venturis. 1 full day at the dyno tuning. total cost ~$6,000 US. The duck's nuts EFI is MoTeC with custom fuel rails, injectors etc. That will cost you 7-8,000 including a day's tuning. To get the most out of EFI you will also want to spend some coin on ignition. You are right about the tunability and adaptability of EFI over Carbs. I like both.

I want to play!
My dream motor/car, at least for today is: Start w a sound 75-76 911 w mag transmission & motor case. Build an IROC copy w a 2.8 or 2.9 with MFI or 46mm carbs & twin plug distributor and all carbon fiber body parts including doors and mini cage. Make is light weight at no more than 2100 lbs and 260-280 hp, close ratio gears, LSD, and sticky tires on 8" & 9" fuchs or minilite wheels. Add plaid inserts to the buckets just for fun. Might have to add A/C and heat so I can drive it all the time. Don't need any tunes. Than is all I need. |

Man you guys dream big!
My modest wish is for a fresh 2.2T with E pistons and cams. And one of those cool twin pipe mufflers.

You could add 2.7 cylinders w custom J&E pistons and modified S cams for a 2.5 short stroke to go with that sport muffler! It would be magical.
Sorry, I could not help my self. |
