915 Swap

Hello,

I have a 1974 mag case 915 and a 1980 alloy case 915.
What is more advisable to do ?
To put the LSD from the late 915 to early or,
to swap the R&P from the ealry to late ???

Thanks!

My understanding is the mag case is better because it has a steel insert where the bearings are. The late LSD should fit in the early case and that would be my choice. The late RP should be an 8:31. Unless you want that gearing I'd keep your 7:31. If you have a high power engine you might want the 8:31 but you will lose your speedometer.

If you put the 7:31 r/p in the late alum case you end up with a "short" gearbox. 3rd, 4th and 5th gears on a late alum case are shorter because of the taller 8:31 r/p and by installing the earlier r/p you have a much shorter gearbox. The 7:31 r/p however is not as strong as the 8:31
