Case cleaning question
 

Just got my case back from the shop that cleaned my parts. The case still has original factory sealant residu on the cast mating surfaces. I don't want to try mechanical cleaning methods and I wondered what magic secreat formula you cagy rebuilders use to clean this up, or is it OK to just leave well enough alone?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1213819878.jpg

I'd have to think that soaking that bad boy in Berryman's for a day or so would dissolve it right off or at least to the point a rag would happily remove it. Hell, Berryman's on a rag may even do the trick. The Berryman's will also most likely remove the epoxy from the case, so be wary if you had your machinist do that work already.

The Porsche Factory Manuals specifically say that sealant remnants can be left in place. I suppose that residue will be solubilized by the new sealant and not present a problem.

On the other hand, those books were not for rebuilding 30-year-old engines. I'll be making sure the only sign of residue is discoloration.

Well, I got it as clean as it's going to get. What I learned:

First, don't cut your thumb on the razor blade.

I found that MEK works well and will remove nearly 100% of the skud. Use a rag and circular motion. All that remains is some small places of discoloration left over. No big deal.

Some of the hard stuff needs to be removed with a razor blade.

I also found that paint remover works.

Finished it off with good water bath, then air to blow the water away and will follow up with alcohol before I seal the case. That is a way off at the moment.

Next step is to JB weld the points suggested by our hosts book.

Mine looked exactly the same.

I ended up using gasket remover and a plastic spatula after trying to remove it for hours upon hours with brake cleaner and rags.

EBS told me that Loctite 574 can be used to remove old Loctite 574 ... interesting tactic but I learned that after getting everything clean.
