1968 Targa rebuild

Got Wayne's book and a lot of work ahead. 1968 911 Targa, VIN 11880027. Does anyone know if I can legally get rid of the smog pump? I want to upgrade tensioners when I rebuild and the smog pump seems to complicate the upgrade on the 68. I take any suggestions anyone has on this project as I haven't started the tear down yet. Also, is there any way to know what model this is (L, T)?

Thanks.

Tom

You shouldn't be liable for a smog pump in any of the 50 states; even Cali has a 2 year exemption. I don't have my book to check the VINs, so I'll let someone else chime in on that.

That is the 911 Targa USA version with 130HP engine. Sort of the plain Jane version. The T version was not available in the USA, and it had the 110HP engine. The 911 and 911L had the same engine. What are the three #'s on the engine?

dj,

The number on the fan shroud is 9011061010R. Does that tell you anything? Where are the other numbers?

You rarely worry about the cast-in (raised) numbers on parts unless it is the major case #'s and you are looking for the 7R cases. These #'s are just part #'s.

Serial #'s are always stamped into the case (recessed characters). An example of the three #'s is here:
Third number on engine case

I am rebuilding my '68 motor also, and I think getting rid of the smog pump just involves getting a chain cover with no hole and getting the snout machined off the left side cam so it fits behind the hole-less chain cover.

What state are you in, Tom?
A friend of mine got an emissions ticket in a '72 914 a few weeks ago. He had carbs on the engine, not FI. The law in Ca is that you only need to have '76 and up vehicles inspected but you must maintain the emissions equipment on older cars that aren't subject to testing. I was shocked to learn all of this, I though that '75 and earlier you could do whatever you want but that's not what the law says. He had to borrow another engine with the FI intact and go through all of the smog referee BS to get the ticket taken care of.
That said, the chances of getting checked are very remote but in Ca at least it is possible.

I'm in CA. Figures that they would require the pump to be kept. Guess I'll live with it. Thanks.
