cam timing tool/sound mat adhesive

This is my first rebuild and I'm now to the step of cam timing. The book shows a mechanical chain tensioner tool. Do I need this tool or can I get by with something else? Also I just ordered an Engine compartment sound mat. Any advice on what type of adhesive to use?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

You can get by with vice grips and/or c-clamps if you have those lying around, but the mechanical tensioners make it sooo much easier. Of all the scores I've made on eBay, the mechanical tensioners I got there have probably paid off the most. They are in a position of honor in my tool cabinet.

For upholstery work including the sound mat, I really like the 3M high-strength spray adhesive. It is extremely important to use it as directed on the can.

Jason, you can also try 3M 08001 Yellow adhesive. There is a 2.5 oz tube and a 5 oz tube, I recommend the larger size because you want to cover the pad as much as possible. Don't forget to remove the engine compartment hood shocks prior to applying your freshly glued pad. There is a rectangular cut out on the left side of the pad to slip the shocks through. Try to work quickly, the adhesive dries fast. get your self a can of the spray adhesive as well just incase you find some areas that did not bond, its easier to bond the loose spots with the can. I hope this helps...
