Funny scraping sound

There's a funny scraping sound coming from the engine in my car. Engine is an old 2.4 T and the noise only occurs, if at all, when the engine is warm and when you let off the throttle and come to a stop. Seconds after coming to a stop you hear a high pitched, metal on metal scaping sound. It'll happen for a few seconds or so then go away. It may happen again or not. Its very noticable such that someone beside the car at a stop would hear it.

It almost sounds like what you'd hear with a household fan going bad. Did not hear this noise until I installed a remote oil cooler up front though.

Alternator bearing ? starter hitting ring gear ?

Doesn't really sound like an engine problem, if it's related to the speed of the car...

a wheels brake pads shot and they and or caliper rubbing on brake rotor ?

does any clutch activation create or stop noise ?

just another guess... good luck

I doubt if its related to the running gear because the noise happens at a complete stop. That's why to me it sounds like engine related.

The alternator bearing sounds like a possibility. Its out of the engine now...is there some way to diagnose that?

Because I installed the remote cooler prior to the noise I am worried that I might have an oil problem that is ruining something inside the engine. The oil cooler is a Mazda RX7 cooler, cleaned to be sure there was no crud in it. The lines are AN12 stainless and I'm using a Mocal thermostat.
