Where to have case work done?
I am trying to find a good place to have some case work done on my Mag 7R 2.4 case.
Want to have it shuffle pinned, oil bypass, and have the spigots checked and re-decked if necessary, and case savers installed. Tried to contact Supertec, but go no response. Want the work done in the next 3-4 months, so need to get it sent out soon. Options? |
Ollies does good work and they had a reasonable turnaround time last time I used them.
Competition Engineering does good work also but it may be some time before you see your case again. Always ask when they think they'll have it done and never ever say "No rush, I don't need it until spring." ;) -Chris |
We've used Ollie's for such operations for many years and have been very happy with their work. :)

I second the vote for Walt at Competition Engineering. He did all the machine work for the engine in the Rebuild book...

Walt did the cylinder head work for my rebuild and the parts came back stunning looking and it was pretty quick as well. Case work may take a bit longer I guess but I always felt they treated me extremely well.

I had the same question because I was looking for a shop that I could transport to, meet the operator and see the facility. The machinist I used had an entrance filled with various forms of shipping crates/palets/ boxes used by others. Shipping is a typical option, obviously.
Your profile does not list your location - this might help with some local recommendations. |
Ollies, excellent work, good pricing and quick turnaround. also been in business a long time.

Another vote for Ollies.
They've been excellent for everything I have had them do. |
I am in Baltimore, MD, so will have to ship it most likely anyway. Not a big deal, just want to use someone that is trusted and will do good work. Already been through one engine due to poor quality of work, so I am being extra careful now.
Will call both places and see who can do sooner. |
On the east coast there is Verdon Tool and Die, in New Jersey. A very capable Porsche-centric machine shop.

New Jersey is not far. Would not mind driving there. You got their contact info.? |
Tim, I swear I am going to put you in a headlock the next time you talk about Verden tool being in "blackwell New jersey"! :) :) :)
Here is the address Verden Tool & Manufacturing Company 121 E Blackwell Street Dover NJ (973) 366-7510 Look, a lot of engine builders on the East Coast have spent about 20 years "cultivating" Verden Tool to do Porsche stuff. . . approach the relationship with them with the "highest punctillio of honor most sensitive" for all work, let's keep them in business! |
Consider also German Precision, run by Ted Robinson http://www.germanprecisioninc.com/

Ted of German Precision (Sunnyvale CA - South end of San Francisco Bay) did my magnesium case, heads etc. He can do anything in his well equipped one-man shop - and he will do it himself using his years of experience. www.germanprecisioninc.com lists a price guide which isn't quite up to date but provides a good guideline of what he does and how much it cost in 2003.
Call and leave him a message at 800-762-1911, he'll get back to you if he's honing, boring, facing, CNGing etc. He was also practical, suggesting I do what was necessary. He shuffle pinned only one center web, oil bypass, timecerts for the headstuds and one M8 stud at the Int shaft etc. No racing here but some DE use - he knew what to do. Head/valve work are his forte and I'm confident the valve guides for my 1975 will last much longer than they did out of the factory. He has a big ultrasonic cleaner that he cleaned a bunch of my stuff in - nice, and gratis. |
I know that CE and Ollies can do case resizing. Which of the other shops listed also do case resizing?

FYI - Ollie's has moved to Lake Havasu City, AZ. I believe today is the last day they will be open in So Cal.
