alternator too short?
 

thought i was done with this project with the new valeo but no matter what i did the fan bumped the housing. The original alternator was a bosch.

I finally put a straight edge from crank pulley to the fan pulley and found that the fan was too deep in the housing and that is what is causing the fan to scrape.

I have the spacer that was with the alternator and it also the original alternator spacer they are the same size.
If anyone can match these numbers for me i would appreciate it.

my 1975 fan housing number is 901 106 101 5R

the valeo alternator number is 911 603 12006
the original bosch and the replacement bosch (these workin my 901 106 101 %R shroud) is AL-9341X
do in need to fabricate a spacer for this alternator?

I am having the original bosch rebuilt at Stellar Alternator in Pittsburgh, a great owner who knows porsche....he recommended that i keep the core from my original and pointed out that the diodes are pressed in not surface mount as they are on the rebuilds.

I assume that the housing was machined by a po to fit the bosch. I think some people have done this according to the threads that i have read. Warren said 9.3 MM so i assume that this is the amount of depth removed.

The alternator on the left is from an '80 SC. On the right is an '84-89 alternator. They take different fan housings to accomodate the depth and to put the fan where it belongs.

I can't help you match up your alternator and fan housing, but I don't think that machining an existing housing or installing a spacer is the answer. The 6mm bolts that hold the alternator in the housing may not be long enough if you use a spacer.

my original alternator was like the taller one. My 1st and 2nd replacements were like the taller one. the 3rd replacement was the shorter one. I did not realize it.

luckily i did not destroy my fan.

I am just wondering if my housing was changed. it is a 901 101 101 5R which I think is original.

Does this housing in standard form take the taller alternator or the shorter one?
I paid the core charge and saved my original, i recommend that all porshe owners do the same and get it rebuilt. In any case you will have a new spare and if i would have just done that i would have not gained so much experience in removing and installing alternators. I think i could do them in my sleep.

I have written extensively on this and even gave a list of the housings that work. . . all in the archives

Believe me i have read them all, i searched for alternators, fans, scraping, housing(S) ,spacer(s) etc.
I did see your post on the different numbers for the housings but i could not determine if the one i have 901 101 106 5R was cut as it uses the 5-71/6 one not the 4-7/8. The 5-7/16 one fits but is it the original size? If not then it was cut and can I expect housing problems in the future?
