Wayne?
I have a question regarding the different fasteners on the heat exchangers.
The Carrera drawing shows two different fasteners. One is a nut (999-084-052-02) @ $3.75 ea. The other (accessible through a hole in the heat exchanger) is a barrel nut (999-085-001-02) @ $3.00 ea. Fine. The Turbo drawing shows only six of the same nuts (999-084-625-02) @ $5.00 ea. Why is this? This does not seem to be a superseded part number issue. My Turbo engine currently has the Carrera style fasteners. Are the Turbo fasteners recommended? If they were easier to remove and would not be prone to breaking exhaust studs, I guess that would be worth something. I have some 8mm nuts in stainless steel that would work just fine, I think. Thanks, Mark

I don't use the factory ones, I just use standard copper ones that are oblong (so they are self-locking). The factory used nuts that were 12mm on the outside so that they would be easier to get on and off in tight spaces. Frankly, with the right tools, they are easy to reach regardless (just use a swivel socket, like the one pictured in my book). Piece of cake.
So, in conclusion, I would use the six barrel nuts and six of the copper self-locking exhaust nuts. I hope this helps answer your question... -Wayne

Wayne,
Thanks for your answers. That explains why the Turbo nuts are $5.00 each, if they are 8mm thread and 12mm wrench size, they are truly unique. I will order the same fasteners that are on my engine now, the combination of three barrel nuts and three of the 13mm copper lock nuts for each heat exchanger. Thanks, Mark

cheap rebuild?
I like the idea of a high compression 3.0L but I am also having this delimna. I know a 2.2T engine is not very powerful but I can live with this since I do not race or autocross. I have noticed that 2.2T parts are easily found on ebay for pretty cheap and I was wondering if it is still a better idea to build the 3.0L engine or would the stock 2.2T motor be alot cheaper to rebuild? I was thinking that I would first have to invest money in a 3.0L core engine and I suppose a new transmission too just to get started. The only change I would make to the 2.2T engine would be a set of E cams. I just know that HP is usually expensive and the while you're in there itis may be too great a temptation to build the 3.0L engine for me. I was also wondering that since the 2.2T engine has limited power, would it be possible to use some aftermarket parts like clutches and still have reliabilaty? any thoughts?
