How do you seperate alternator from fan housing?

It's been so long since I had the alt & fan housing out of my car that I don't remember if I seperated the two. Now working on my replacement engine and cannot seperate the fan housing & altenator. Tried tapping on the back side and broke off a piece of the alum casting on the alt which fell down into the alternator and is now rattleing around

Looks like taking the alt in to be bench tested and rebuilt as necessary is no longer an "option"

Need to seperate to get fan housing powder coated. Any tips....not doing so good on my own. Should I just let the alt shop deal with it?

BTW, the Alt is a Bosch Valeo Mfg in France unit believed to be orig - engine has 58k on it.

There is a method that i believe is attributed to John Walker. Where you gently drop the fan housing on two blocks of wood. And keep a soft material to catch the alternator. Do a search he has written it out pretty well. I'm just going off of my memory and I would not trust it to summarize the procedure without looking.

I had to use a plastic hammer and gently tap the heads of the screws to get mine out.

Good luck

The John Walker method works for me every time. I have done dozens this way.

A towel or blanket on a concrete floor. Two short 4X4's spaced about the fan diameter part with the towel/blanket in between.

Lightly bang the outer edges of the fan ring on the blocks and the alternator will drop on the towel/cloth.

Got it seperated in less than a minute using this method.

Thanks!!!!!

Removed my alternator from the 1971 Targa using the John Walker method, worked like a charm. Sending off for rebuild and the fan to the soda blaster.
