How do you ID a 964 cam?
I was thinking of placing 964 cams in an 81-82 3.0SC engine with CIS. Is it true I can just place them in and not change much else in the process. Is their much more hp than worth bothering with? If you have a photo can you show a 964 cam next to a regular 3.0 cam? Thanks.

Hi,
JMHO, but I wouldn't bother with a cam change unless its done with a good performance exhaust such as SSI's and a sport muffler. ID's cams by appearance is skin to alchemy,....:) :) Given the popularity of re-grinding factory ones, you cannot tell by simply looking at them. 964 cams do have the PS drive on the right side, but the ONLY way to make a positive ID such things is by having them checked with a Cam Doctor |
You can use calipers and measure the distance from the base circle to the nose of an intake cam lobe.
964 cams have more lift and a little more duration than SC cams and the difference in that dimension is quite noticeable. If your cams were welded and reground by Webcam, grind #40 is their 964 profile. |
