Can This Case be Saved?

I picked up this damaged 2.7 7R long block as part of a recent job lot purchase.

It was a 2.7 race motor with 91 mm P&C's and big port heads that threw a rod thru the case.

Is this case junk or is it worth repairing? The scrap metal dealer gets 5 cents/lb for magnesium.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Here's pics

the block pictured is not worth the risk. I have thrown away good used 2.7 cases just because they are so numerous and less desirable then all the other 911 engines.
You can make the best of the head stud pulling problem with the 2.7 by installing 2nd oversize case savers and using Dilavar head studs. Yes steel stud's won't brake as the Dilave studs will ocationally but bottom line. Less chance of pulling head stud's [ yes even with the 2nd over saver] in the 2.7 case. In my opinion. D. Shift

It's hard too tell from the pictures, is the bearing saddle cracked or is that a machining line? If the saddle is cracked, it would be very difficult to weld up and be able to maintain the alignment of the other bearing saddles.

If there are no cracks in the case, send it to Henry and let him fix it up. Did you see that crank he had? Sheesh!

The hole should not be much of a problem for a good welder.

They are no longer making any of these, duh.

Looks like you have a nasty crack from the sealing line to the bearing saddle... so I would say its scrap... Then again, a 2.7 race engine should have had all the nice machining tricks already done so if it is not a crack I think its savable... but, if it were in my car I'd always be wondering if it was going to go... at least for the 1st season ;)

I guess you could repair almost anything, but at what cost? Is it going to be worth it?

Do you have a surface plate to at least check it after pulling all the studs for starters?

Poor quality inserts (perhaps heli coils), no shuffle pins, trauma that has possible hidden cracks and serious damage to the main oil transfer galley.
Trash it. 7R cases are too common to spend another penny on this one.

Thanks everyone.

To the dump it goes.

Tom,

Cut it apart with a bandsaw, it will make a nice display of the oil passages.

Unless of course it's an RSR case :)

I'd love to have it for my collection grenaded parts - if you can box it and drop it at a DHL package dropoff, I can send you a label. If you're up for it, of course :)

The best use for that case is a mock-up gig. Assemble all the NFG parts in your collection and use it to construct and dimension ancillary systems. Intake and exhaust system mock-up come to mind.

I guess the crank from this motor qualifies as NFG.

Perhpas I could use it to check for bearing saddle warpage on my other mag cases (assuming the mains are std and it's not bent).

Ooh, fun! If you cut it open I'd love to see pics...

Hey Dave: I have a 2.7 head you can have for your collection on how not to time an engine!

Damn Craig! I'd add that to my 3.0 head with the screw loose...no really, a sheetmetal screw was loose in the combustion chamber.

So that's what it looks like after really, really bad detonation? Or was that mechanical...

BTW I've got a couple thousand miles on the Targa with the super-secret rockers and the valves are loud as hell - if I can ever get some free time I'll see what's going on in there...

cgarr 10-02-2008 03:13 PM

Its real bad bad detonation! Have you re-checked the valve adjustment since the rebuild? We have several thousand miles on ours now and many hard track weekends and have never touched them yet but that was with an original set of cams. Were you running new cams?

dtw 10-02-2008 03:24 PM

Nope, haven't done my valve adjustment yet, I'm way overdue. Used cams with DFL.

why not send it to Roy at Motormeister - he sure will find use for the case and the crank
