Casesavers

Can someone please enlighten me re Casesavers? In the UK we are familiar with Helicoils (probably like the time certs mentioned on the Pelican site) but I have not come across Case Savers.

What is involved in installing them?
Is it a DIY job or one for the machinist?
Is any special tooling or equipment required to install them?
If so how much $$$$?

Hope to hear soon - my 2.7l is in complete strip down and I need to have it ready to rally after Xmas

Thanks

Paul

A casesaver is a steel threaded insert, OD is 14X2mm Its really not a DIY job unless you have a mill, I set the case up on my Bridgeport and use an end mill to cut the new hole then use the mill to cut the new thread, I made an install tool which is nothing but a socket screw as you can see, a little loctite and run them in. The mill is used to keep them straight and accurate. I get $175 to do a case, I don't know what others get? I also install a casesaver in the 8mm thru bolt at the lay shaft.

How does a case saver differ from a Timesert? Is is thicker?

I have never used timeserts but I think it was posted here that the threads are finer so you don't get the bite like the casesavers.
