2.7l bad stud vs 2.4l dropin
Hello I have the chance to either rebuild a 2.7 that has a pulled head stud (typical) or purchase a 2.4l t MFI. the 2.4 has 28,000 on a jerry woods stock rebuild no upgrades. looking at the price of the 2.4 vs rebuilding the 2.7 seems cheaper to go with the 2.4 t.. one of these would be going into a 66 3 gauge 912 that resides at 6000' elevation. Any guidance would be great.

2.7 rebuild done properly costs a nice-sized pile of cash. I spent 7k this spring doing one with my own labor, 8k including the big oil cooler setup. The 2.4 sounds interesting - I've got a built 2.4 that is a ton of fun. What're the specs on the one you're looking at?
Then of course there's big-bore, aluminum cased stuff ![]()

Well the only info I have on the 2.4T MFI is that it has been rebuilt by Jerry Woods, but no upgrades mentioned at this point i think i can get the 2.4T for 5k which seems to be pretty good, any opinions would be great.

My first question would be is "why is a Jerry Woods engine not being used and out of a car?" unless there is something wrong with it???
You won't be happy with the 2.4T engine after having had a 2.7, no more than going back to 2.7 after having a 3.0. Worlds of difference. I would just rebuild the 2.7 and you'll know EXACTLY what you have and not gambling on a $5000. dollar 'maybe it will run for a long while" worry. It won't cost 7k to rebuild a 2.7. Here's the run down on the costs. I just got the new price list from the Porsche machine shop I use. They moved out of state and I'm still going to use them. Here are things you can't very well do at home. Best for a machine shop. Crankshaft micro polish 40. Rebuild 6 connecting rods 150. (inclds. bushings) Balance " " 45. Hone cast iron cylinders 90. (Deglazing) Head stud inserts Mag case/290. Alum. case 315. Hot tank crank case 40. Resurface heads 190. I had heads completely rebuilt for $600. - 700. Then buy: Gasket set about 300. , Collapsible oil tubes $25 ea., pop off valve $60, 6 new injection port hoses $5 ea., std rod bearings $104. , std main bearings ($) Buy the reusable valve cover gaskets, get the 930 exhaust covers with webbing for less oil leakage, ..... my point is I don't see this adding up to 6K. Depends on just how bad your engine is. I would park it now and not make it worse. Regards and good luck to you. R. Coarse thread inserts: ![]() ![]() |

Thank you relay, the answer to the 2.4 is that EBS racing is selling it because the previous owner of it went to a bigger motor. I have a 66 912 w a 1.6 in it, I am looking to to a heart transplant. The 2.7s is on a stand in a guys garage he says it was pulled due to a leaky head stud says they did a leak down on it and the one cyl leaking is the only bad one however it has been sitting for atleast 6 months I think i would have to buy it then rebuild it which is where the cost comes into. He is asking 2k for the 2.7s think i can get him down a bit. Thank yyou for the price break down it helps alot.

induction on the 2.7?
top end w/ DIY time pulling it apart wouldn't be that bad. relay i'm not sure that honing cast iron cylinders applies to anything beyond a T (and even then not entirely certain; are they coated?). a lot of potential expense can be found if p/c's need replacement.

Tohoelife,
In case it may be of interest: I bought a 2.4 case and had it machined to the bigger 2.7 configuration along with having the "steel" case inserts done by Ollies Automotive Machine shop (specialty is everything Porsche). I purchased a set of NEW in the box German Mahle pistons that came with the wrist pins. I found a source and got them for under $1300. total price. The rest is just stardard gaskets, rings, senders, bearings, etc. and cleaning or bead blasting parts to look pretty. I have it all ready to build and then to sell when it's done. Don't have a date for completion.... as the cash flows so goes the build.... at least at this point. I'm also at the same point to build my personal '81 3.0L SC engine. See photos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
