Cam Ends

I picked up some 993RS cams for my 993. The old ones have these notches in the ends, but the new ones do not. I can't figure out what they are for, can someone help?

The special tools to set the cam timing go into those slots.

Ah, so if I use the old style cam gears to time the motor I do not need those slots?
