82 start after 9 years
 

I just purchased a 82 911 targa that has sat for the past 9 years. Individual who owned it was converting it to a cabriolet. Started working on it and then lost interest. It has 59,000 miles. I completed the cab conversion and now it is time to try to start it. I removed the gas tank and cleaned out the filter trap and tank. Disconnected all the fuel lines and flushed everything from engine to tank. Removed the accumulator and fuel ran out. Any other suggestions before I try to start it.
This is my first 911 ownership, so I don't want to screw it up. I'm a hot rodder and never realized just how expensive Porsche parts are. Any and all help would be appreciated.

One thing I would do is to build up oil pressure before starting it. I just disconnect the coil wire and crank it until I see oil pressure starting to build on the gauge. Then I reconnect the coil wire. I just do this to be sure oil is flowing through the entire motor before firing.

Sounds like you took care of the fuel stuff

Pull the fan housing and check for mice nests. I can almost guarantee that you have a mouse nest on top of your oil cooler. The oil cooler is on the right side engine, nearest the front of the car.
While you could run the motor like that, it would be like running a water cooled motor without coolant.

I'd suggest spray oil in every cylinder through the spark plug hole before cranking it.
