The forums opinion the leaking chambers?

I'm helping a friend work his 3.4 engine, while driving it on the race track he heard a exhaust leak. After pulling the motor and popping off the heads this is what we found, It seams either the head studs are old (they are) or they heads were not torqued correctly, ask any question you like to bring light to the situation

Talking

Looks like the bottom row of studs needs to be steel and the heads may have needed to be flycut.
Anytime you open an aluminum case, change the dilvars or install steel. reminder, the 3.2 gets 15 Ft# then 90 degrees on torque value for the head.

30 year old parts tend to be old. That doesn't necessarily mean they're dead. Did your friend notice anything unusual when he removed the head nuts, i.e. were they loose? Were any studs broken?

I don't know. Could be a blown head gasket. How does it look? Could be detonation damage.

Studs or ?

cyl. 4,5,6, all had studs with way different heights, All but one combustion chamber was leaking. The head studs were 1/4 turn past snug 20ft lbs max. the rods are stock the pistons are molly ( Light weight) bearings are good. Heads off to the machinist for R&R, its a Funny puzzle.
Will have some re-assembly questions all help from people in th know is appreciated in advance

Head studs all had different lengths? There's a clue. There IS a spec for the length of the head stud from the case to the top - I think 135mm. Not sure how much wiggle room you're allowed, but it sounds like that may be the root of your problem.

Yes , the difference in lengths is substantial across the cylindes up to 5mm. We had a Guy who knows his way around an engine look at it today, and I think my friend has a sound plan.
I've just been a fly on the wall / gofer and it's bee a great learning experience. Keep any ideas on re-assembly handy.
