oil pump cleaning?

I have purchased a used 4 rib oil pump to install in my 2.0 liter race engine. My question is: What should be done to the oil pump prior to installation? cleaning? How do you clean it?

Thanks,

David

I stripped mine.

My engine dropped a valve and smashed a piston, there was crushed up metal eveywhere inside.

I sprayed carb cleaner into the oil pump and a load of swarf came out, I carried on, each time I got less swarf, but every time there was at least one little speck.

So I pulled it apart, washed each peice and reassembled. I say if its unknown either dont use it or get inside to check it out.

Remove the four M6 nuts. Pull off the end housing. Use a punch to mark adjacent rotors, they wear in against one another over time and must be reassembled in the same order. NOTE the orientation of everything as you remove the shafts.

It is likely that you will discover some debris inside the pump housing. Check the rotors carefully for damage, it's possible that metal bits could have become ingested. You can thoroughly clean the inside of the housing. Reassemble and be sure you have everything back in the correct order, use clean new motor oil to prevent rust inside. Drip some oil in the inlet hole on the rotor and spin the shaft, it should spin freely.

I have heard of people reducing the end clearance around the end of the rotor in order to prevent oil from squeezing around it, but this is a fairly high-precision operation. One would simply remove material from the mating edge of one half of the case with a piece of sandpaper on a surface plate, assemble and plastigage the end of the rotor to determine the clearance.

Watch the torque on those M6 studs, only about 8 foot pounds should be enough. I used red loctite on the nuts as I don't want them coming off without my help.
