Exhaust options in CA on an SC?

I'll be doing an engine rebuild soon on my 1980 911sc 3.0. I'm interested in extracting a little bit more power out of it (of course). I've been looking into the upgrades that Wayne recommends in his book. I like his suggestions, but I've got a couple of questions.

First, what sort of options do I have for a more free flowing exhaust that will still pass smog in California? 17-22 hp from backdated SSI heat exchangers sounds great, but I need it to be legal.

Second, is anyone running the setup he recommends? 964 cams, JE pistons, and SSI heat exchangers... Curious what you think of them. I've read the 964 cams improve top end power but can take away from the midrange.

In order to pass a smog check, which at this time is required, you must have a stock exhaust.

That's disappointing. I saw in another thread that someone puts his stock exhaust back on every few years for the smog check. Seems like a lot of work but it would be nice to be able to run the backdated exhaust.

Good news, you have an 80. No smog pump. So, you can do SSIs, and then fabricate a catalytic converter setup from the dual outlets to a single cat and use that for smog. Loud as hell, but, assuming the car is in good tune, it will pass the sniffer test. Most smog techs dont know what they are looking at anyway, but as long as the cat is there and functioning, you will be fine. Ask your local porsche shop who they recommend for smog.

Sounds good, but I have no idea how to go about that.

Any muffler shop can take two 90s, put flanges on them. Run them together into a Y and I to a universal cat. Easy peasy
