Boring 3.2L 95mm cylinders to 98mm?
Hi,
I want to bore some 95mm Nikasil cylinders to 98mm, however, I'm wondering whether there'd be enough "meat" left to have the barrels flame-ringed also? This is for a 3.4L turbo application.

I've wondered about this too
I've wondered about this too, my thinking is that you could have them bored and re-plated with nikasil for less than the cost of new ones, then get pistons from JE or Wossner etc.

Bored out 3.2's are the same as using a Mahle Motorsport 98mm cylinder. The dimensions are identical. We've made "ni-resist" for these cylinders many times. You just can't start with a 3.0 cylinder.

Don, thanks for your input. How much do you typically charge to bore, re-plate and flame-ring the 95mm cylinders and heads?

The ni-resist are a "custom" part so we have some different designs we've made. The set of rings can cost $400 to $500/ set of 6. To machine the matching grooves into the heads and cylinders is about $500/set. To bore and plate a set of cylinders to 98mm is $895/set of 6.
Let me know if I can provide any more info! Don

![]() I just checked out my 95mm cylinders and they don't have MAHLE stamped on them. I don't think they are Nikasils ![]()

As long as they don't have the CE groove in them, they can be used.
Technically, depending on how desparate you are, you can make the cylinders with the CE groove work, but you have to use a stepped L shape flame ring that goes all the way to the bore and just has parent aluminum from the cylinder around the outer diameter of the flame ring, kind of like CMW's GT2 flame rings for 964/993 applications. The rings would be the expensive part of doing this - cheaper to just start with a cylinder that doesn't have a groove, but I've done it. A simple copper crush gasket can be made to do this for way less money, but wouldn't be a true flame ring. I've seen this done with stainless too...

Hey there Charles! You're correct, of course, but there's just a greater chance of failure with the 3.0 cylinders and I'm a little more conservative.
If the cylinders are KS Alusil that's just fine. The plating adheres to to the impregnated silicon better anyway. Certainly not throw away parts. Don
