Heat exchangers question.

Hi to all.

I am starting the rebuild of a 72' 2.4 mfi engine with 69k on it which has been stored since 1990.

I have a pair of SSI heat exchangers on a 2.2 carb engine which I am hoping will fit my 2.4 mfi engine.

I am aware that SSI make a few variations depending on carbs -v- mfi.

Does anyone know if they are a straight fit? - due to there expense Im hoping that they are

This is my first 911 engine rebuild - my learning curve starts here!

Thank you.

HI Conda Green 71t
Has your L/H heat exchanger got the air takeoff pipe for the MFI pump, if so fit will be OK , if you have not you will need to fit a pipe to look like this,

this is not from a SSI heat exchanger, I would find some one close to you and look at the way it is fitted, or a original Porsche one for the correct fitment, as a wrongly placed heat pick-up pipe will give you fueling prob's, with not or to much heat to the pump, if you have the choke on the pump blocked off, do not bother with the pipe.

Hi Mike

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me.

No my L/H heat exchanger does not have a take off tube. However I am heartened by the fact that it does not look to be to difficult to fabricate/recreate

In the second photo the top view shows the tube passing into the heat exchanger from the outer wall and I am assuming it just ends there (cut flush) in order that it may simply be force fed with hot air ??

Many thanks for your consideration

Tom

HI Tom
2 more photos for you, it is NOT a SSI or Porsche heat exchanger.

Mike,

This does not look like it is going to be a big problem - (famous last words) I feel sure if armed with measurments I can recreate this tube. I will start with my rusty MFI heat exchanger.

I will keep you posted.

Many thanks

Tom
