Cylinder base gasket question

Hi,

Currently doing a rebuild on my Euro 82 SC, and have noticed that in my gasket set, the cylinder base gaskets are 0.25mm thick, however the ones which were oringinally installed were 0.50mm. From the specs I've seen the standard factory thickness is 0.25mm, and I'm 99.9% sure the engine has not rebuilt in the past, nor the heads skimmed.

Why would the Factory use the thicker gaskets ?

thanks

David

HI David
you will need to check your cylinder height with the manual, the top of the cylinders could have been re-faced by .25mm and the base gasket fitted to adjust the CR, if you need any more info please call or E-mail.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the quick response. Is it possible that the factory could have skimmed the cylinders / heads ?

HI David
it could be poss' the head height was cut wrong or the cylinders where to short , if the engine has not been apart???? but i would think it has.

HI David
just a thought, the engine may be a factory exchange/re-built unit and the car has had a re-con engine fitted at some time in it's life??

Done a bit measuring tonight, and found that the deck height with the 'old' 0.5mm gasket is 1.00mm (measured with a vernier). Also measured the cylinder barrel height and it measures 85.40mm, and is stamped as height group 5, so that correlates. Must be some tolerance stack up somewhere, but I guess I'll just put back in 0.5mm ones. Anybody know any stockists in the UK, other than porsche ?

thanks

David

HI David
I go to the OPC for them, you could try Uro-car parts, Burt gear Berlyn services, just check the price before you bye, you may find OPC cheaper.

I am rebuilding my 81 Euro SC and noted that I also have .5mm base gaskets. I am almost sure the motor has never been rebuilt or opened since purchase. I will be putting the .5mm back... anybody need a set of new .25mm? :)
