Break in process question
I have rebuild my engine some time ago, before the body restoration of the car. Since the car is coming back from the painters in 2 weeks, I can't wait to start my freshly rebuild engine.
I know that the first time you start the engine, you have to run it for 20 minutes at 2000 RPM for break in. After that you can have short drives to finally run the car as normal. Since I still have to build up the car when it returns, but I want to start that engine, can I do that initial 20 minute break in and then leave the engine for a couple of month without starting? (changing oil of course after initial run) Or do you have to go ahead with the further drives immediately after the inital run? Your advice is appreciated! |
I think it depends what is new in the rebuild; The 20 min procedure is for rockers/cams, but for seating the rings the initial run with varied rpms is very important. Since it is recommended to let the motor cool down overnight between the two, I do not think waiting a few months would make a difference. More importantly, do not forget to build up oil pressure by cranking without spark and gas before the first start.
