fixing leaks
Hi I am relatively new to the 'marvels' of air cooled porsche after 20 years of...alfa lancia and FIAT joy.
I have a 71T with 2,2 motor. It is leaking form the rear seal and also a main seal towards the front of the motor. The case has also had a silasitc applied to it externally by PO. I want to make it relatively drip free...I stress relative. Can anyone point to a good existing thread or make a simple suggestion re: antidote. At the moment I do not want to totally strip the motor... cheers Michel |
you can replace the front and rear seals. the motor has to come out but not apart.
it may not help though. there is a rubber O ring on the crank inside the motor, i have seen it wear a groove in the case and replacing seals does no good. i had a 2.2E in my 914-6, i could not get the front seal to stop leaking and my brothers 2.4 was the same way. perhaps someone will chime in to confirm/deny this. the best thing to do is clean the motor very good and find out for sure where the leaks are coming from. |
If the # 8 main bearing is leaking the engine has to come apart. At that point the case must be evaluated and a proper solution applied.
In some cases that means align bore in all bearings including the # 8 which is generally excluded from the align bore process. Oversized # 8 main bearings are available but very pricey. Over the past 30 years I have seen all manner of external repair and none have proven to be "worth the effort". |
thanks any other tips? I keep hearing about a book by 'wayne' who is this? where can it be bought?
