verifing cam punch marks
 
Working on older engines and reading about the punch marks on camshafts can sometimes have to be lined up opposite of each other (ie. one punch mark on top with the other cam mark pointing down), and I am wanting to verify this issue.

I have a set now I'm looking at have no punch marks (911.105.141), but just stamped (911) on the upper and (14100) on the bottom?

I decided to pull the left one and measure the lobes and first verify what I have.

I am trying to avoid what old t has gone through.

Don't worry about it. When you time the cams just make sure the intake valves for number 1 and number 4 open 360 degrees from each other. If they open at the same time then you need to rotate one of the cams 180 degrees.

Does anyone know what the dial guage reading should be for a 911/51 type??

if you do it this way, pull the pin and rotate the crank. if you try to turn the cam, you will bend a valve.

I didn't think about rotating the cam this way, I ended up removing a bank of rocker arms.

Thanks to John Walker for the dial adjustment values I was able to set the valve timing.
