Perhaps stupid question. How and when to check float level....

I'm almost ready to start up the rebuild engine. The only thing I haven't done yet is check the float level on my rebuild Zenith's. Is it essential to do this before you initially break in the engine? Or can I do that afterwards?

Also, when do you start checking your float levels? Should you install the float gauge before starting with only the fuel pump on? If you then switch float chambers, is it normal to spill gas?

Just have some questions I don't have the answers for.

Thanks for your help guys!

You are correct, the engine doesn't need to be running to check the float level. The fuel pump must be on and the level will rise until the float valve shuts and stops the fuel flow.

I'm unfamiliar with Zeniths, so I don't know what the level should be. I would expect to spill fuel when you remove the guage.
