Head/Tower Assembly
So I'm ready to bolt my heads and cam towers on and I've been putting it off for weeks. The bentley manual I have indicates the heads should be bolted and torqued prior to installation of the cam towers. It's in print so I guess someone has managed to do it this way but my understanding is that the towers must be bolted on and torqued before the heads are torqued? What's up with this manual?

I have seen it done both ways but I like to assemble the heads and towers first, it seems to make it much easier and you don't have to be so quick with the 574 as you can do one head at a time.

Its easier to assemble the heads and towers, then I install the cams and set the rockers, back the crank about 40degrees so none of the pistons will be up to the top, thread the chain boxes, install the return tubes and jig them all together at one time.
definitely easier than trying to hit the 18 studs on 3 heads sitting at different angles Bruce |
I labeled all the studs on my towers so I could quickly follow the proper torque sequence they recommended.
Good luck, Alex |
So as I was torquing my heads (after installing each head on the cam tower - I was surprised how fast the 574 setup) and all the loose and broken studs I'd seen posts about started bugging me. Just how accurate with the 90 Degrees are you supposed to be? I suspect I got it within a couple degrees but I'm not a big fan of eyeballing things when it comes to measurements. My cams spin freely and I suspect most shops don't spend much time on this but I'm really fighting the urge to redo them.
