Missed gear change disaster

Hi Guys
In the last session on a LeMans track day I was on the rev limiter in 3rd and going for fourth and grabbed 2nd.I put the clutch in instantly but the engine spluttered to a halt and I knew it was a goner
I have pulled off the rocker covers, top look fine but the exhaust valves no1 & no4 have bent valves. The adjusters are wound all the way out why is this ?
Whats really worrying no4 lock nut has gone awol.
Really frustrating as I have only got my car back on the road after 6 long months fitting EFI
I will strip down for further investigation but does anybody know the procedure for changing rod bolts without splitting the case ?

Wow .... there must be some mighty strange physics going on there.

As for new rod bolts w/o splitting the case ... I haven't done that but people do. You can't use a stretch gauge, but torque to 50-55 foot pounds should get you there (assuming ARP).

I tried to get into the data log last night Safe but couldnt find the file.
I will take the ecu to the manufacturer sometime this week and find out.

Full top end tear down pictures of the carnage to follow very shortly

I had a less significant missed shift once...
luckily I only "kissed" the valve and didn't fully bend it.

but my adjuster also loosed and back off the same
I was told by a 2 mechanics that this is very very common

I found my nut in the lower valve cover
you definitely have to find it
get a magnent into all of the passages

HI MrPerkles
changing the rod bolts is not a prob' with the case not split, just use a 2nd person and a good screwdriver to hold the big end cap, then work the cap round the crank until you can remove it, if you have stretched things, just be careful the bearings do not drop in side when you pull the cap off, I would replace the bearings as thay have taken a beating, for the peace of mind and a little extra time I would split the case and check the main bearings also. if you want to give me a ring about the engine please do 015395 67959.

regards mike

Ahh Mike Bert has told me all about you and I know you can build a mighty C3
I might do a part build but probably DIY as my budget is 10 northern pounds and a chicken.
I will strip it right down and post my findings on here but would love to hear your advice over the phone

Many Thanks Andy
