Early Aluminum Case Cam Alignment!

So, I'm putting my engine back together from many different parts when I realize I'm having a hard time aligning the cam sprockets to the intermediate shaft depth. The case is an early sand cast case with the original shaft which protrudes ever so slightly from the case. While its hard to get an accurate, repeatable measurement, I'm curious, how many is too many shims?? If I put 4 on the right side and 3 on the left to start...is ending at 6 on the right and 3 on the left too many??
Thanks,
Nabil

In the early stuff, the only thing exact is the measurments you make. tighten the 46mm nut tight and shim til youre happy.

Read this thread first for the intermediate shaft shimming

Assembling 1966 901/05 Engine: Phase II-Sealing up the Short Block

Next: do you have the Stomski tool for measuring the sprockets? If you don't have that tool, or something like it, it will be borderline impossible to set it accurately.

Next: The number of shims is PROBABLY the same, make sure you knock the keyed pulley all the way on to the camshaft. Think about it: the cam housings are the same length, the cams are the same length, so they should ride in the cam housings about the same.

I did pick up the Stomski tool for this...I will also say that the straight edge that came with it is not so straight. Its two feet long and from end to end is off by 1mm. I've checked it and rechecked it. So I will make sure that the "straight edge" is kept in the same orientation for both measurement to negate the effect of the slight bow. I'm assuming that the messurments using this tool will have to be made including the slightly protruding IM Shaft. I'll read your link and report back. Thanks for the assistance fellas. Nothing has been easy here.
