3.0 Reassembly Progress
Well, I'm finally getting around to reassembling my motor and thought I'd be a good citizen and post a few pix. I followed the general consensus recommendations regarding case sealing and used the combination of TB1194, TB1211 & Loctite 574 to seal er' up....hopefully there won't be any leaks...
![]() P&Cs going on this coming weekend, will post more pix as I go. Mike... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Installed P&C's this past weekend...
![]() ![]() ![]() Then I discovered this inside an intake port of one head...these were rebuilt at a local high performance machine shop last year and I never looked that closely at all of them when I got them back, just put them in a plastic tub until now. Must have happened when they installed the guide and they never said anything to me. My mistake for not examining everything carefully when I picked them up. ![]() ![]() Anyone have a spare '78 or '79 big port head they want to sell? ![]()

John,
Believe me, I will have lots to say to my buddies at the machine shop.... ![]() They're usually very good and treat me well, but I'm surprised they didn't let me know when it happened. I had the heads done quite some time ago, so I'm not inclined to go charging in full of fire. I'm sure they'll make things right when I bring them another head and show them the damage they caused. I've talked to Tom and bought parts from him several times before. He's a good guy to deal with and I certainly plan on contacting him about a replacement. Thx for the reply. Mike... ![]()

Hmm, that seems like a pretty obvious error. Perhaps they had a junior guy working on them that day?

Wayne,
The shop I've been dealing with caters to the high performance and racing industry, mostly American iron, but they work on all makes of foreign as well. They did a great job on a complete TR-6 engine I brought to them last year. The young guy who works on my Porsche stuff, while not a Porsche expert, has Porsche and VW experience and understands German aircooled products. He's also a conscientious individual, so I'm more than a bit surprised the head was returned to me this way. At this point, so much time has passed that no one is likely to remember for sure what happened. I just want to find a replacement and move on. Mike... ![]()

Had a similar experience with a local shop that I have used since I was 16 ,and always did great work. Air cooled 911 heads are just simply a different animal than most other american iron, and most import stuff. My guy was good about it, and refunded me some money, but I still had to source another head and some more work. I will only use the Porsche shops now. ebs, olllies, etc.... Good luck , and nice eye, that could have been disasterous .

I went ahead and installed the right bank of heads and cam tower yesterday. Installation went well, but required quite a bit of time to clean and stage all parts in preparation of actual assembly....final check was made with cam inserted and it rotates smoothly...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was planning to reinstall the SC cams as is to keep costs down, but now that they have to be sent out anyway, I guess I'll go with a different grind (964?). What's the best choice to work with 9.3:1 CIS pistons, 40mm webers & SSIs? Looking for best low and mid range combination for street use, not high RPM power. Thx Mike... ![]()

964 is supposed to be good for a little boost. Many also like the Webcam 20/21? Theres not much you can do with the CIS pistons.

HI Mike
when you get your replacement head just check the hight with the ones you have now, and if necessary you may have to fly cut your cylinder heads or the replacement to match and then adjust the cylinder base gaskets on that side to match the C/R back to STD. other wise if you assemble and not check the heads, the cambox could not sit correct on the heads, making the cam bind/tight in the cam bearings. regards mike

Andy,
DC-19 cam was recommended to me by John Dougherty as the most agressive cam I should consider for my application. In comparing profiles, the DC-19 is identical in all advertised areas except for a slight increase in I/E lift values and a variation in valve timing. What would be the defining performance difference between these two cams. Also, how does the 20/21 cam caompare to these two? Mike(MBEngineering), I've not had any success so far locating a suitable replacement for the damaged head, so I may be faced with repairing the one I have. That's the trouble with having somewhat desireable limited production parts, its like having a rare blood type, kind of cool until you need some.... ![]() Thank you both for the feedback. Mike... ![]()

Finally finished my rebuild, installed it and got it running this past week...thought I'd post a picture and thank everyone who helped along the way. I'm happy to report the motor runs great, and so far, appears to be leak free...

SCrescue, What ever happened with the head you needed to replace~fix??
Also, what cam did you choose and why?? Lastly, if you have driven the car, what do you notice different about the engine performance vs. the previous/original engine you had before this new build you just completed? Thanks for sharing and best of luck!! Bob

Hi Bob,
I was fortunate to find/buy a replacement head (actually an entire set) from another pelican at a very good price and the machine shop prepped it for me at no cost (they acknowledged that they must have caused the damage). I can't really comment on how the motor ran, or how the car drove previously, as this has been a project from the beginning. I received a non-running basket-case '79 SC about 3 yrs back and intended to bring it back to life, but decided it was BER (aviation acronym for Beyond Economical Repair)...so I kept the motor/trans and parted most of the car. I've rebuilt the motor with minor mods (SSIs, Webers, DC-19 cams, MSD, hyd tensioners, Mahle 9.3:1 P&Cs), located an '84 roller and just finished the install a few weeks ago. I got the motor running last weekend and it runs great. Webers were easy to set up on this motor, took very little time to get the motor running well, but I'll be tuning it further as I start driving it. As expected, throttle response is excellent (I run Webers on my other car with an American V-8). In fact, the flat six revs even quicker than the V-8! This is my first 911, but I've driven a few SCs with CIS in the past and was never impressed. This motor is much more flexible and fun to drive. I've built quite a few motors (all types), but this is the first Porsche motor and it's far and away the most challenging I've ever tackled (except for the turbines I used to overhaul much earlier in my career)...to say that I'm extremely relieved and pleased that it doesn't have any apparent leaks and runs well is a vast understatement... ![]() Mike... ![]()

Congrats Mike on hanging in there and seeing this project through! I know how long and the ups & downs a project can have as I am still woking on an 82 targa and a recent project of a 73.5 T complete resto...
Please keep updating this thread to show pics and your comments after the engine install... how it runs... so we all son't miss the final outcome... Thanks again for sharing your 'trip' down Porsche road... Bob
