Big end bearing failure
Hi guys,
Just wanted to know how common big end bearing failure is in the 930 based engines. I would also like to know what the consensus is on the cause of failures. Cheers |

I personally believe it should be quite uncommon. 930 develops max power at 5500 RPM so there is no need to wring it much further (which doesn't prevent some owners doing it beacuse "redline is at 7000", making more noise and stretching the Carrera rod-bolts). So unless there is oiling problem (clogged oiling hole, debris floating around, long storage period resulting in water-condensation and subsequent rusting, overrev etc)...crankshaft will hold fine.
It will leak from cylinder base, valve stems will be worn, rocker shafts will get worn etc. but crank bearings should be fine.

I see more 3.0/32,33 cranks wasted in the middle journals, 2 and 5 from lack of oil to those large ends. They are directly oil related because there is always massive scuffing of the journal before the rod bolts break and when the bolts break everything around it is destroyed.
I have been intrigued with the cross drilling done for better oiling, but realizing the abuse the engines get I realize that a few will be lost. Bruce |
