Tim's Rebuild 2.7
 

I have acquired a completely disassembled (case split too) 2.7. No broken headsteds (no inserts either), cylinders look, crank and cams looks good but don't know how to verify. There is no unusual scaring, etc...

Since I didn't disassembly the engine and have never rebuilt one, I am a little nervous. Got the books and generally consider myself mechanically inclined. I also have a running 2.7 so I can verify how the accessories attach.

My first question, given that I am a complete novice, would you recommend having the case examined and reassembled by someone else? Any ideas what that would cost? Any improvements you would recommend to the case to improve performance?

As a novice (I'm one too), I would highly reccommend getting a "professional" inspection, especially given the somewhat fragile nature of the mag cases. Besides, install the case savers now (machine shop probably needed) to save yourself from having to do it again.

You said you have the books. Most of the stuff needing inspection probably needs minor machine work anyway, so you should be taking it to a machine shop. Wayne's book lists estimates for prices (one of the better know shops in Cali... don't have the book so I can't look it up). For peace of mind I wouldn't trust whomever you bought it from unless you were part of the disassembly.

As for reassembly, I'll leave that reccommendation up to someone else. I just know I'd prefer to have all the parts inspected & machined by someone who has all the necessary equipment and expertise. As the old saying goes, you either pay now or pay later.

The heads need to be done and the case inserted and dilivars installed. Put a magnet on the inside of the cylinder..Magnetic, theyre nikisil, non magnetic, alucil, dont build with them.
You need a shop to do the heads, inserts and casesavers. you can install the dilivar headstuds your self.
Now the reality is the value of the parts exceeds the value of the whole especially if theyre good.
When you get done spending thousands of dollars on a 2.7 the value is questionable when youre finished because you cant spend enough money for parts that someone isnt going to boohoo your build..just the reality of a 2.7
Buy a 3.0 and spend your money there. The residual value of a 3.0 is several times that of a 2.7, no matter how well its built, its still a 2.7
