oil leaks

I am helping a friend tidy up his 2.7 motor. It is leaking way too much oil.
We are replacing all seals etc above the cylinder heads. The cylinders , heads and studs all seem tight.
What is puzzling me is the amount of oil grunge on the top of the motor case. It is filthy, and worst towards the breather end. The breather hose 'looks' OK, the gasket on the breather cover 'looks' OK, and the cover was down tight.
We will replace the hose and gasket as precaution. But am I missing something here as to a possible leak on the topside of the motor. The oil pressure sender unit also look OK, but will check that too. But the oil mess extends from the upper crankcase seam all along the case and down into the cooler etc.
Any other suggestions before we tidy it up and put it back in the car?
Don't want to miss something here.
Thanks
Alan

PS, the breather hose held quite a bit of oil when we took it off - maybe 100ml of oil drained out of it. I was not expecting that - is it normal?

On a 77 you only have the one line from the breather to the tank and the small line from the filler neck to the airbox. The small line pulls the vapors in the tank to behind the filter. The vapors solidify and becomes oil and drains down from the back of the airbox. There is suposed to be a small oil line draining the airbox to below the sheet metal forward by the oil cooler.
That is one place to get oil on top of the engine. Another is a dry seal on the thermostat or the idiot light switch is leaking.
Hang the hose with the oil in it so there is no low spot for it to pool

Many thanks.
I did not know of the airbox drain tube, and did not notice one.
I will inspect. Just a curse to put it all back in and miss something like that.
Thanks again.

Flat6pac, where exactly should the small air box oil line come out; is it attached to the sheet metal?

We have got a drain tube that comes off the bottom of the box - and seems to go to a vac operated valve - part of the egr I suspect. The exit from there seems to go to the egr system that hooks into the exhaust side of the heads - altho that bit is missing on this car.
I am suspecting if that egr valve is not perfect, we would get a vac leak there?
Can I just plug that all up?
