Help with engine performance issues
Ref; 77' 2.7 CIS - I've got this engine running ok except for a couple issues I still need to resolve and I need a couple of opinions on these points...
1) When warm, the engine hunts at idle. It has gotten very warm here in the high desert so I need to check a/f mixture and possibly lean the mixture a little bit. Also check the usual suspects; fuel pressure and WUR specs. Anything else I'm missing? 2) Any opinions on replacing points with Pertronix? (Other than having a spare set of points if Pertronix goes). Also, if I do this, does that eliminate the condensor? 3) Plug wires - I have the stock wire set on the engine. Why are they shielded and all other brands aren't? If I want to replace them what wire type (not necessarily brand) and specs should I look for? 4) I also have a random miss (occurs under decel and accel). Actually, it is a "drop out" more than a miss. The tach will indicate it. I have replaced the CDI, VR and AAR. It still occurs. Obviously I will dealing with fuel issues on point #1. Any other things I may be missing? Thanks all for your input. |
If youre hunting idle youre running too rich CCwise on the 3 mm allen until is settles at an idle.
77 isnt suposed to have condenser at the distributor. Make sure youre running Bosch coil 001 last 3 digits on bottom of coul. Bruce |
Sorry, my bad on the condensor - thinking type IV.
In regards to the drop out...cracked rotor. Tiny stress crack would open with rpm and change contact location. Still looking for input though on plug wires and Pertronix. |
The sheilded wires are radio supression wires, basically for looks. Replace with 1973 non covered, my preference is Beru over Bosch, or go get a roll of 7mm wire and make your own set if your connectors ohm to specand have the screw in connectors,

the drop out could also be part of the mixture problem.
could also be timing. check the advance too check the wires from the dizzy and coil to the CD unit. they tend to get brittle and break. |
Thanks T77911S. Actually I'm have a whole distributor issue. See this link for what's up...
