81 sc, no start fuel pump primes nothing from starter
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about diagnosing a no start situation on an SC where the starter doesnt turn at all? I switched the relay in the rear with one of the headlight relays since they are the same part number. The fuel pump runs and when i remove the fuel pump relay i hear a "click" from the rear but the starter does not go. I have also swapped the battery out with another known good working battery.

There are several possibilities, it could be the solenoid, starter, ignition switch, ground connections, or wiring. The first thing to understand is that the cold start valve is powered every time you turn the key to start and fuel is spraying into the engine flooding it. The thermotime switch is not quick enough to shut it off in multiple attempts to solve the starter issue, so remove the fuel pump relay until you get it cranking. The first thing I do is disconnect the battery ground, charge to battery and check the voltage. Clean the ground strap to the engine while it is charging, clean the battery ground and hook up a voltmeter to the small yellow wire at terminal 50 on the starter. When the battery is above 12.6 standing volts, make all the connections, turn the key to start and determine if you are getting 12 volts at the starter. If so, the ignition switch and wiring is OK. If the starter is still not cranking, try running a heavy jumper cable directly from the ground terminal to the engine. The starter must come out next, you can try cleaning and lubing the solenoid. There is a fault in the ground wiring on the Bosch starter which is never touched in a rebuild and unfortunately you can get a rebuild that does the same thing after a year or so. The new rebuilds have solenoids that are made in Mexico and cannot be serviced.

If in the time youve been checking things you have removed the yellow wires on the starter, the yellow/blue goes to the lower post of the 2 post on the selenoid.

81SC no start
Did you figure out what the problem was? I'm working on the same thing. I've isolated it down to the starter not turning, so I'm about to remove it.

very good advice from psalt
not sure what ground fault he is talking about. would like to know more. the contacts in the solenoid get burned and erroded away from the hi current. it can be removed, the contacts cleaned and rotated to fresh meat. about half the contact hits the 2 large screw heads inside, so rotating them 180 puts new surface in contact with the lugs. problem is, you need to know how to solder. if i had a spare starter, i would do a thread, with pics, on doing this. it can even be done without removing the solenoid from the starter. mine started slow not long ago, maybe mine is next. actually, it is the lugs you remove and rotate.

I had the same issue. It turned out i had a bad starter and a bad battery. Had the starter rebuilt locally. All works ok now
