head stud height question
 

hello all,

We are installing our brand new head studs into our sealed case. In Wayne's book, he says that the head studs should be 135mm in length above the flange of the case. However, coincidentally, our head studs are 135mm above the cylinder spigot, which makes them about 137.5mm above the flange of the case. In thinking about it, it makes more sense to measure from the precisely machined surface (cylinder spigot) instead of the flange. From which surface should we measure the 135 mm? We know that this is a critical dimension and don't want to make a mistake. Thanks.

Run the studs all the way in and measure to make sure theyre all equal. When they bottom, youre at 5 5/16 inches

we have chased all of the head stud threads with a die and run the studs in until they seem to bottom out. There are two issues. First, not all of them are the same distance from the case (variation of about 3 mm). second, we do not know which surface to measure from when we are measuring the 5 5/16 inches (or the 135mm). if we knew which surface, we could adjust the head studs to be the right height. do we measure from the cylinder spigot or from the flange of the case?

I always measure from the base that the cylinder sets on for measurment.
