Epoxy (?) removed from block.
 

Hi folks,

I just finished removing what looks like melted epoxy or rubber seals from several locations on my block.

My question is... Do I need to reseal these with anything? Or do I just paint over them. The stuff I removed was a gray color and really strong.

I clean those areas and use J-B weld to replace the factory sealer or epoxy they used.

+1 on the JB Weld to seal. That is what I did on mine for the rebuild

Those are oil galley plugs and need to be sealed otherwise you will be very sorry,......:) :)

JB Weld is OK.

Buy Wayne's book on rebuilding. There is a section in there on all the places you need to remove and replace the factory epoxy. There are additional places, the chain covers come to mind, that need to be checked and/or removed and re-epoxied. Since you have removed it already off the galley plugs, you may consider taking the additional step of removing the plugs and cleaning the galleys out.

Scuff the area with fine sandpaper so the epoxy sticks real good and use the slow24 hour JB weld.
The quick hardening JB weld doesn't hold up under heat nearly as well or as long and will shrink and delaminate eventually from the heat.

Does anyone bother to tap and plug those with a pipe plug + locktite
rather than using an interference fit aluminium plug?

Yes, Henry at Supertec does. Seems to me to be a lot of extra work for no gain, make sure to tap it before cleaning the case.
