Mahle pistons and LN cylinders.........
Any reason why using LN cylinders and Mahle pistons (both 100mm sets) would not work properly?

With the correct clearances, it would be just fine,....

This is easily done. Just ask Charles.
The nickel silicon carbide coating can actually be put on quite thick and be stable. I had picked up the pistons and cylinders as two different purchases for dirt and the pistons were a bit small, so just a thicker re-coat and hone was required. The LN nickies use a better alloy for the cylinders so in my mind it's a very worthwhile 'upgrade'. t

I seem to recall Charles saying in a thread some time ago that the different expansion properties means that Nickies work best with J&Es - which are forged. Aren't Mahles cast?
IIRC from fitting forged high C/R pistons to an XLH years ago, forged pistons expand more than cast, so require more clearance and are therefore more prone to piston slap when cold - but you should do your own research... Here's an actual quote from https://www.lnengineering.com/911.html Quote:

For my money, I'd go with the matched set of Nickies and J&E pistons. But it's your money, your motor. ![]()

The mahles are forged as well. There seem to be two different alloys used for pistons. One flows easier than the other while forging. Mahle uses the hard to use material which requires bigger tooling and it is longer wearing. See here:
