Broke oil seal ring, timing chain came loose
Trying to rebuild a 911SC 3.0 with a new baby crying in the next room is not a good mix
![]() Unfortunately, I broke an oil sealing ring while installing a cylinder. I got the broken piece out of the case but I suspect there is a 1.5mm piece still in the case. If I can't find it I guess I am into splitting the case right??? To make matters worse while fishing around for the ring remnants the timing chin came loose from the inner sprocket. Can you put it back on the sprocket without splitting the case?? Advise would be greatly appreciated! For those of you who are attempting their first rebuild my advise is patience and take your time!!!! |

Less brakes, more gas!

Never done this myself, but I'm pretty confident if the chain came off it can go back on again.
As for the ring bit I hope it is magnetic? If not, you should still be able to find it. Just rotate the engine around on the stand, which I am sure you have been trying ![]() -Michael

the left chain can easily come off the intermediate shaft sprocket. it can just as easily be put back on by tilting the engine on the stand so the left side is up and working through the drain plate hole, where it is quite accessable.

Chains can go back on without a split. Just takes some times, and a long screwdriver to help get it back on the sprocket.
I would put a plastic drop cloth down under the engine, and spin it slowly while listening for the ring bit to drop.. The tarp makes it easier to hear... Have fun |

Thanks for the feedback.
After removing the sump plate to put the chain back on I discovered metal bits in the screen. I did get the chain back on...but ended up splitting the case anyway. I decided it would be follish not to fix it right when I have come this far. ![]() |
