sealing EGR head ports
My EGR stuff is removed. Where the tubes bolted into the heads, were some allen head screws. I guess they were there for a while - installed by PO.
My engine blew one out the other day. I now find some of the others are loose too. I want this fixed so I dont have to think about it again. The thread is an odd one - a 1/8 NPT as far as I can determine. I've found more allen head screws with a slightly longer taper. But this does not seem bullet proof - nothing to fix them in place other than thread torque. I dont think loctite will work at 1000F +. I also found a hex headed 1/8 NPT bolt. Perfect - I can nip it down into the head surface. Except it only seems to come in brass. Will brass handle the heat? What do others use for this? Thanks Alan

What you need is 10mm fine thread bolt will work.

Do you know if you need to re tap the holes?
The plug size is 9.4 mm, and the tpi is 27. The 10 mm bolts dont quite come to this spec. A 10x 0.1 pitch would give 25.4 tpi. That is why I ended up with 1/8 NPT - 27 tpi, (same threads) and tapered diam around 9.4mm. Regards Alan

I checked the thermal specs for brass. Its coeff of expansion is less than, but closer to aluminium than steel (ie better than steel for this job).
And the melting point is higher than Aluminium. So, it would seem a goer if no other issues. I was just hoping not to be the guinea pig if there is other experience out there. This is my track car, which gets a lot of WOT. Regards Alan

i generally use brass 1/8" HEX head pipe plugs. the hex head allows an 11mm (7/16) socket to go over it so they can be tightened nicely. the allen head style won't go as tight without rounding out, usually. if you look in the pelican catalog, 914 rear caliper adjustment hole plugs are the best. they are 10mm fine and have a flange.

Excellent - thanks John.
Looks like the brass 1/8 I have found are worth a shot. The 914 10mm fine would need re tapping in the head? Regards Alan

I have purchsed some 1/8 brass plugs locally, and ordered the 914 plugs - they look better.
Do I need to re tap hole for them? Thanks Alan

the 914 plugs are straight thread and screw right in. the pipe plugs are taper thread and they screw in and bind. the thread spacing is pretty close between the two types of plug so no retapping is needed for either one.
