Oil screen question
 

Why did the early engines have the oil screens (windage trays?) and not the later engines?

I don't have any factory documentation for the change so I'll guess

1) No measured HP gain because it's a dry-sump engine so oil level is low in the case anyway;
2) Longer stroke made it impossible to fit
3) Following the oil bypass mod in 1976, oil foaming and windage issues were even further reduced
4) These rust due to water in the oil, contaminating the oil system

I left them out of my 2,0 restoration.

After 2.2 they wern t installed any longer, probably the stroke change

Are you sure or making a guess? I've seen plenty of your posts so I know if it is a guess, it's a highly educated one.

My 2.4 has it.

The answer has to do with how many engines I ve opened and after 2.2 its about the end of the screens, but I could be wrong..but I dont think so.

Would it be prudent to leave this out when I finish my rebuild or does it really matter?

Huh...I've been inside at least 2 2.4s that had them - but they certainly could have been added at a rebuild.

Dude: I left them out of my build, as did Tim Walsh on his.

The plastic around the edges gets brittle, falls apart and then you have little chunks floating around and getting ground up. Don't use them. Porsche hasn't had them available new for decades. About the only thing they were good for is catching the large chucks if your motor blows up.:cool:
