Crankshaft Oil Seal chip - case OK ?

And so the long-delayed engine project has finally begun...
My core '75S came to me with flywheel but no ring gear so the first task was pulling that. Amazingly (or not...) the flywheel bolts came right out - maybe 100 lbs/ft torque but no more - and no evidence of threadlocker. As soon as the flywheel was off I met with my first surprise - there's a chunk missing from the oil seal area...

I'll document more about this engine as the teardown progresses - I have no doubt there are more horror stories lurking inside. For the record, I am comfortable with the provenance represented to me by the seller and my price paid. I expect to retain little more than the case in my rebuild project - and now I'm concerned about that...

So - is this missing chunk cause for concern? (I know if it was a good thing it'd have come that way from the factory...)

I'll be sending the case off to Competition Engineering (probably) for all their mag-case magick. Is this something they should be able to weld up? I'd hate to go shopping for yet another case...

As long as you get a good seal (the lip is past the chip) it does not matter.

There is a notch like this on the number 8 bearing where that oil seal goes. I don't remember seeing one where yours is but I doubt it would cause problems.

Generally people do not weld magnesium anyway... small problem with the flammability

I looked all through Pelican Wayne's book again today and did find a small photograph near the back of the book that showed an identical notch. Thanks all for the encouragement! Obviously I do not recall having seen that before...

More updates (and questions) to come...

(BTW - I've seen lots of magnesium weldments - with the proper gas shielding it can be done. I agree it's not a DIY project, but I expect mag-case specialists know where to have it done...)
