Advice on Smoky Rebuild
I recently purchased some used pistons and cyls from a member here
Tom1394racing for my 2.2E rebuild. I bought these instead of going with the low cost E-bay New P&C's from a previous post of mine. I was assured that these were within spec and had been reconditioned to good working order. The engine was re-assembled and is now running, but smoking like a chimney.:mad: Not much smoke on startup, or low idle, but LOTS of smoke when the engine is reved or driven. I would assume that the rings have not seated. Any advice on what steps I should take next to help the rings seat? Or will they ever? Or any tests or way to tell for sure that this is the case? I plan to pull the plugs today to see if they are wet with oil. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
You have to run at different rpms and burn the old oil out of the exhaust. Run at say 3k for 10 minutes or until the smoke at that rpm stops then go to 4k for a few minutes, minutes
@ 5k is up to you but until you ve been there for a while when you get up there it will show smoke. Bruce |
yep. differ the engine speed and let it coast in gear to seat other way.

What work or checking was done on your heads? Smoke can also come from oil through the valveguides.

I have run the engine at various RPM's for a few minutes, but never as much as 10 min - I have been reluctant for 2 reasons, First the quantity of smoke can fill a stadium, and second, I was not sure that running that high for that long without air cooling would be good. ... So I'm happy to hear the advice of this forum...
In addition, I have driven the car about 35 miles at various rpms since the rebuild...with no difference. As far as the heads, the valve guides have been replaced by a qualified shop. |
