Retighten Permimiter Bolts

Hi,

I have a issue with a leaking rear main seal not from the crank but from the outer bottom edge where the case joins. I am about to take the engine out to fix this again (second time) and wondered if I should tighten the perimeter bolts around the seal.

The concern is that the sealant has hardened and that changing the torque of the bolts will effect the sealing properties, in a bad way.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Mark....

Well, youre already leaking so you cant do much more damage and if you dont try it you ll never know

I am inclined to believe the same thing.

How bad is the leak? Are you sure of the source?

Don't do it, you will break the studs and then you will have a hard time getting them out, this could require splitting the case again.

Ok thanks John and MCA,

The leak happened after a full rebuild when I had the engine on the stand to replace the clutch, a year later, I changed the seal but immediately had a small leak from the bottom of the seal at the seam. This was only from the oil that seeped to behind the seal while the engine was sitting. So I changed the seal again....all seamed fine. Until it was started. Only a small drip, seams to be when it sits rather then when running.

It could be from the crank but until drop the engine I have no way of knowing. Just getting my optionsready before dropping the motor.

Thanks

Mark......
