Rookie 3.0 rebuild

I'm working on a 1980 3.0 that will find it's way into a Intermeccanica reproduction Speedster along with the 915 and all the 911 suspension from the 1980SC Targa. BTW The complete shell is for sale.

Update: Tear down pictures:

OK I got lucky and other than 7 broken lower studs the inside of the motor looks beautiful. Everything is within specs and looks as close to new as possible with 115K miles. I hit the lottery and the motor was built with the Mahle Nikasil piston and cylinder combo.

This is what I"m thinking. Keep the bottom end stock 3.0 right down to the pistons and cylinders. Install the Carrera tensioner upgrade along with the top end turbo oil restrictors. From the heads up I thinking using the 964 cams with the stock 9.3:1 compression. I will have the intake ports enlarged from 34mm to to fit Weber 40's. MSD Ignition, SSI heat exchangers with a M&K Sport exhaust system.

I'm looking for a mid range upgrade that will be not to radical and around 200+ HP. It should work........thoughts? I need help with ideas to start from on the jetting and vent sizes to use in the Weber 40 IDA's

Thanks!

Bump

Guys,

I could use a little help here. I have a lot of experiance with Detroit Iron, VW's and 356's. This is my first 911 rebuild and I want to get it right. Am I on the right track? From what I have read here and on other forums I think I am but a little yes or no from a knowlege base like this just to confirm my ideas would be cool.

Thank you

You are on the right track. I would port the heads to 38mm. 46mm carbs would give a few more HP but the 40's will run very well. This will give you an easy 220 HP or so. For the carbs I'd use 36mm venturis, Mains around 150 and air correction around 190. I don't remember the emulsion tube numbers I have but I think F3 is a common 911 tube. I bought a cheap wideband O2 guage to tune with and highly recommend it. Try 55 idle jets but be prepared to go with 60's if you have flat spots.

Sounds like a great project.
