Case is together, but......
Hi All, went in to the garage in daylight and came out in the dark , the case is together and all looks well, BUT.. about 3 of the blue thur bolt seals haven,t seated right and have come out from under the washer (I KNOW, I SHOULD HAVE USED THE GREEN ONES), they,ve spread out on the bolt head side, can i take the bolt back out and fit a new seal and then torque it back up without disturbing the case sealant.

HI malpaslane
you will need to replace the seals , which seals have come out?and how bad are they, is it the top or the bottom set of bolts with the seals out and removing the bolts should not affect the sealant, which sealant have you used?, did you use any LUBE on the seals, I use a lube on the blue seals with good effect and only the odd seal comes out like you have if the washer turns on tightning, due to not enough lube on assembly. regards mike |
i have the exact same thing on my rebuild. Used the blue ones, 2 have squeezed out between the washer & case. I saw it when I had already put together the heads, etc, so a teardown was not really an option anymore.
Someone on this forum told me just to try it and see if it really leaked. So on break-in I expected a leak there, but nothing!! I have put roughly 2500 Kilometer on the engine and still no leaks!! So it doesn't have to be so bad. What I did do is use Dirko on all of the through bolts on the outside to ensure they wouldn't leak. And they don't. If you can, wait a bit untill the sealant has hardened on the case perimeter and web's and take them out one by one and replace the seal. You should be fine doing this without disturbing the case sealant. Good luck! |
Thanks both, I,ve checked the case and found five seals have squeezed out ,2 on the bottom row of bolts and 3 on the top, all on the bolt head side, my first rebuild and i was panicking about the sealant going off, i used 574 sealant and got a perfect amount squeezed out all the way around the case, so i wouldn,t be happy if i had to go back and split the case to redo the bolts. I,ll leave it afew more days for the sealant to harden and the new seals to arrive and then give it ago,
many thanks Rik.. |
You have nothing to worry about.
I sealed up my case (574) without using the o-rings on the through bolts. I didn't feel that I would have enough time to apply the silicone to the o-rings and get them all torqued properly within the 574 setting time period. After 24 hours I pulled each through bolt (one by one), installed the o-rings with sealant and torqued it down. I read about this "trick" from someone else on the board. 8000 + miles later and I am still leak free. Best luck on the completion of your rebuild. Good times! |
Me too. Works great.

The lubricant used on the O rings is silicone paste like dow corning 111, this is non harding, basically the same as dielectric paste. Don't use the harding silicone as used on other engines. I've never used any lub on these in the past, and they have squeeze out without any oil leaks. But since you can easily replace them why not, just do one at a time and use silicone paste compound.

Thanks again to you all, i don,t know where us first time engine rebuilders would without this forum.
thanks guys |
i hope you ordered the green ones. i wouldn't use the blue ones ever. might as well be jelly.
|
Where can i get the green viton seals, i don,t think anyone in the uk does them,
thanks Rik.. |
pelican # 999 701 006 40 m213. right there in the catalog. how about MBEngineering? he's over there and post here a lot.

Great just noticed I have blue o rings in my rebuild kit,Mike what lube do you use with them please ?
|
Use Dow Corning 111 with ether color o-rings. The green are Viton o-rings and should be available everywhere. Mine came with Wrightwood Racing gasket kit. Pelican should have them if not then check with EBS Racing. Should not be much to ship anywhere as there is almost no weight to them.

Well, not knowing any better I bought a bag of blue ones a few years back. Haven't had any unusual leaking. I used motor oil for lube.
Trick is to make sure you counterhold the bolt end when tightening so that washer doesn't move. No way to do that on the nut end, but I've never had more than a little blue fuzz squeeze out. There really is plenty of time to fasten the two sides of the case together before the sealant (at least the Orange Loctite I have used) sets up. But you want to have your through bolts all set and ready to go: a washer on each at the bolt end, with a seal snugged up against it and lubricated, all of them lying on your workbench within easy reach, before you mate the case halves. HI MrPerkles
I use the blue rings OK depending on the make of gasket set, give me a ring 015395 67959 regards mike |

Somehow I ended up with two bags of blue rings when I did my rebuild. One type was a darker blue and noticeably more firm. Apparently all "blues" are not the same.
I used them and haven't had any issues. |
