Cleaning Crank

I called a local shop that only works on cranks to see about having the crank chemically cleaned, basically to clean out the oil passages. He recommends drilling out the al. plugs and then threading the hole for allen head plugs, and of course cleaning while plugs are out. Does this sound like the proper way to do this? Would this affect balance?

I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable guy around here, but seeing that my crank is in my house as we speak and I was just perhaps considering the same thing. I would have to say there is no other way to properly clean the crank without removal and re-installation the plugs. Threaded plugs sound good to me.

Leakproof.

Always, always, always remove the plugs to flush the crank.

After this post I decided to call German Precision about the threaded plugs. He recommends this, only word of caution the crank is very hard and it may be necessary to replace the tap after each hole.
