Beginnings of a 3.8l build.

Hey guys,so I'm building basically a track car with occasional fun morning sprints. But i need your help on the motor side of things. Basic info on the build is as follows:

1980 911SC tub
3.6l out of a 964(more on that in a second)
All carbon fiber panels fron GT Racing(quarters, doors, bumpers, tail, roof). Going the 74RSR route
Full roll-cage
915 box
Going full coil-overs from Rebel Racing
Hydraulic lift system with external compressor.
Plexiglass windows (except for front window)
Lightweight racing seat with full harnesses

End goals for the car are somewhere around the 2,000lb mark with 380hp and a nice torque curve. The motor will stay NA. I want a snappy free revving motor with a limit set somewhere around 7500rpm mark.

Questions on the motor now(sorry for the long post).

I want to run ITBs because the stock manifold is super restrictive(and they look cool.hehe). I'm thinking of using the FVD 3.8l P&Cs(Mahle products) with their titanium valve train, and Corillo Con Rods. As for the cam profile, I was waiting until I picked out my ITBs(based on previous info from other people, is this true?). I'd like to run Motec as well. I know I'm missing a lot of other vital info, but how is this sounding so far? Just trying to get my ducks in a row. I'm still about 6 months out before I start the motor side of the project. But what are some reputable manufactures of ITBs? FVDs are just too expensive($10k). PMO, or 9M, or Extrudobody(sp?), etc. Looking for opinions.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. I'll add to this post later tonight or tomorrow.

Chris

I like my Hargett Precision Products ITBs. I went with 46mm butterflies for my 3.3SS. With hindsight I probably would go a little smaller. Until I took out some ignition timing, I had too much throttle response to drive around town in traffic. I have a MoTeC M800 and the engine is twin plugged with Toyota Tundra COPs . As always YMMV.

Thanks Scotty. I've been looking at your stuff as well. Top notch!

Rluciano, too much throttle response? Are you enjoying the Motec system with the Toyota COP? Thanks.

Yes too much. In traffic, it was only manageable by slipping the clutch. Otherwise the car would leap forward. You don't want to rear end the guy in front of you and you don't want to leave so much room that someone can cut in front of you.

I love my MoTeC and COPs. Programming the ECU has a steep learning curve, but it is a lot of fun.

Now I can just idle forward in traffic without fear of stalling. It took me a while to get here though. I am not running an ISV.

Okay, if ur in St. Aug you should look up Big Mike at JB Racing in Travaris and we need pics!

What wheels will you run? I'd consider old school Fuchs from Lindsey Racing...

Who is Big Mike? I was going to drive down to Pompano and see Willie at FVD and get some suggestions and pick up a few parts. But their stuff gets super expensive, super quick. Just for the valves and P&Cs with Corillos you are looking at about $8,000.

As for photos, their are some in the general tech section of pelican and on Funf as well.

Wheels, some old 935/917 five spoke wheels. Havent decided as of yet. Those are still a LOONNGG way away. hehe.

Luciano, are you running a lightweight flywheel as well? Any photos of the motor?

Chris,

Just as another suggestion, Jenvey here in the UK make ITB's....I'm sure I remember correctly in saying that Chris @ TurboKraft talked about them (Jenveys) to me a few months ago, in one of our many conversations; think he was using them for one of his projects.

Spencer.

Chris,

Really looking forward to your build. I would like to do something similar in terms of the engine.

Let's see, stuff you haven't mentioned but I'm sure you're thinking about...

oil pump: 964 vs turbo vs gt3
heads - flow optimization: Xtreme performance vs Steve Weiner @ rentech
lay shaft: straight gears?
Oiling mods for crank
bearings - smart racing

On the items you have mentioned
con rods: There is also Pauter and R&R. Pauter is liked by at least a couple of engine builders on this board and I have seen at least one engine builder vouche for the R&R rods in GT3 racing. Of course, carillo has a good rep. I think I would go with lightest of these.

P&C's: I would probably also go with Mahle, but you may want to consider Nickies with JE's.

good luck!!

No lightweight flywheel.

Here is an old photo before the AC compressor went on the bracket on the left. Is there something in particular you want to see?
